Outcome of Consultation on School Admission Policies

Admissions Consultation for Staploe Education Trust Schools for the Academic Year 2021-2022

Staploe Education Trust conducted a consultation of admission arrangements between 12 November – 24 December 2019 with all our schools’ parents/carers, staff, other local schools, county councils, councillors and Soham Town Council.

Those consulted were asked for their view on the proposed admission arrangements, for introduction for the academic year 2021 – 2022 and thereafter.  The changes are outlined as below and the policies in full are attached below:

  2. The amendment of criteria 4 – update of the definition of siblings

  3. The insertion of a new criterion relating to the children of staff, to be criteria 6, as follows:

Priority will next be given to children of staff at the school, in either of the following circumstances:

  1. The member of staff has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission to the school is made, or

  2. The member of staff is recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage

Consultation Feedback

Three pieces of feedback were received in response to the consultation.

One parent wrote in support of the addition of children of staff being included in criteria.

A staff member wrote in support of the addition of children of staff being included in the criteria but raised that they felt its position as criteria 6 would mean it would fail to increase the likelihood of children of staff, who don’t live within Soham, gaining admissions to the school.  Due to the number of children within catchment expected to start school over the next few years and the demand on secondary school places in East Cambridgeshire, per the data published by the Local Authority in 2016, placing this criteria higher in the oversubscription list would make a more meaningful proposal.

Another parent wrote to say that they didn’t feel that children of staff should have priority as some of the primary schools in Soham are already full even to children within catchment.  They felt that the priority should be meeting the needs of the children and parents within the catchment area.

Outcome

After careful consideration the Board unanimously agreed to accept the changes originally proposed in the consultation for admission from September 2020 for the academic year 2021-2022 and thereafter.
